After we decided to accept our summer internship with FedEx Freight, we had some pretty funny conversations with people about Arkansas. One of my favorites was about “black hole” states. My friend said that black hole states are the ones that you’ve always been told exist – but you’re not really sure because you’ve never actually met anyone who has been there!
I guess I'm a little sheltered, though, because pretty much every state between Colorado and New York would be a black hole to me! Needless to say, I never thought that we would find ourselves in this part of the country. AND since we don’t know when we might be back, we have been trying to experience and enjoy as much as possible.
Soooo, on Thursday we decided to check out Memphis, Tennessee. We booked ourselves a hotel room for the following two nights - and that was about the extent of our planning!
It was a fun little adventure - although Mia didn't appreciate the 4 & ½ hours of driving. In fact, she was feeling pretty irked about sitting in a rear-facing car seat, especially because she missed out on all of the sights of the city. So, we took several breaks to let her stretch her legs.
Mia’s favorite part of Memphis was our visit to the Peabody Hotel which is famous for a long-standing tradition. Since the 1930's everyday at 11 AM sharp, the Peabody Ducks are escorted by the Duck Master from their home on the roof to the elevator, down 11 stories, across a red carpet, up the steps, and finally into the fountain in the hotel lobby. (And they grace the red carpet with more than just their little webbed feet - if you know what I mean!) They again grace the red carpet at 5 PM when the procession happens in reverse, and they retire to their rooftop penthouse. It really is quite the event, and Mia was very impressed with the ducks:

No no Stephernie- Illinois is no black hole state to you. But, I do think that Arkansas would be a black hole to me. Are you sure it exists?
